5 Factors to Consider When Choosing a Vibratory Machine

Vibratory Machines

Selecting the right vibratory machine will ensure your part is finished correctly and as efficiently as possible. Choosing the right Burr King vibratory machine depends on several factors including the size and type of parts you’re finishing, the desired finish, and the production volume. Whatever your specific requirements or needs, Burr King has the right vibratory machine for you.

Here’s a guide to help you decide which Burr King vibratory machine might be best for you.

5 Factors to Help You Choose the Right Vibratory Machine

Using an incorrect vibratory machine can cause your parts to become damaged, extend the deburring and finishing process for your part, or limit the type of vibratory media you can use. Before you purchase, it is essential to understand the following five factors that will impact which vibratory machine is right for your specific applications and needs.

1. Part Size (Shape & Quantity)

  • Small to Medium Parts: If you’re working with small to medium-sized parts, a smaller M150 – 200 vibratory machine might be suitable. These machines are compact and can handle smaller batches effectively. The M150 and 200 are able to be operated on a bench top or can be combined with our 5000 StandPak for a free-standing machine. If you are looking for something just slightly larger that is free-standing the M15 Vibra KING Medium Bowl might shake up your decision.
  • Larger Parts: For larger parts, consider the M25, M45, or M85 Vibra KING Chambers. These models have larger tubs and can accommodate bigger pieces or higher volumes of smaller parts. The M85 can handle up to 900 combined pounds of part and media load.
  • High Volume Small Parts: The M40 Vibra KING Large Bowl excels at running small parts. Its built-in parts separation allows the operator to easily unload the machine with just a flip of the switch. The M40 can also be equipped with dual timers which allow the operator to set a specified run time to be followed by a specified unload time without additional operator input.

2. Desired Finish

  • Deburring: If your primary goal is to remove burrs and sharp edges, all Burr King vibratory machines are effective. However, the M25 and M45 are popular choices for deburring. If you have heavy plasma dross, the M85 with Duralum media has the energy to attack the big and heavy projects.
  • Polishing: If you need a high-quality polished finish, machines with larger tubs like the M25, M45, or M85 allow for better media flow, leading to a finer finish. If the parts are small and the quantities are low, smaller machines like the M150, M200, or M15, might be the ideal option.

3. Production Volume

  • Low to Medium Volume: For low to medium production volumes, smaller machines are sufficient.
  • High Volume: If you’re dealing with high production volumes, larger machines like the M85 might be necessary to handle the load efficiently, but do not rule out having a pair of M45s in your shop. Often if the parts are smaller, running batch style with large volume is the way to go. With multiple machines, you can always have one up and running while loading or unloading the other machine.

4. Specific Models Overview

All Burr King equipment is industrial-grade and can be run either wet or dry and is compatible with most media. All models feature adjustable amplitude, except the M40.

  • 150 & 200: 10-quart and 20-quart capacity respectively. These vibratory machines feature a benchtop design that can also be mounted on an optional StandPak 5000 which also incorporates a process control timer.
  • M15: 40-quart bowl design with compact, cell-friendly footprint. It is designed with an integrated stand and timer standard.
  • M25/M45/M85: 2.5 cubic feet to 8.5 cubic feet. Our family of tub style machines features rugged steel construction with hot-pour 5/8” cast urethane liners. These models are available in multiple power configurations. Optional accessories like sound damping lids, filtration systems, and process timers maximize efficiency and operation.
  • M40: 4 cubic feet. With production in mind, the M40 allows for automatic part separation with a flip of the switch. The M40 is ideal for smaller, high-volume parts.

5. Additional Considerations

  • Media Compatibility: Ensure the machine you choose is compatible with the type of vibratory media you plan to use (ceramic, plastic, dry polishing media, etc.).
  • Noise Level: Larger machines tend to be noisier, so consider soundproofing if noise is a concern.
